APRIL 17. 1969 Nationalist China Extends Invite To Liu Fayetteville — Dr. Shia- Ling Liu, Fayetteville State College professor of history - political sci ence; has received a spe cial invitation from the Nationalist China govern ment, FSC President Ru dolph Jones announced to day. Dr. Liu has been ask ed to attend three high- level political-education al conferences during the latter part of March and early April. The meetings are sche duled for Taipei, Taiwan and include the Interna tional Sinological Con ference, March 25-27, Chinese Overseas Affairs Conference, March 28- Aprll 2, and a conference comprising Chinese stu- ents-scholars educated abroad, especially in the United States, Japan and Western Europe. “Explosions of Sinolo gical Studies inthel950's and 1960’s” will be the theme of the Initial con ference. According to Dr. Liu, it will deal with ma jor developments of re lated programs during the stated periods. The second meeting will deal primarily with Chinese residents in for eign countries. Dr. Liu feels that the latter meeting will be concerned with strength ening Chinese efforts to reverse the so-called “brain drain”. Specifi cally to encourage native Chinese intellectuals to return to their native land to teach and lecture for a few years. “'More than 1,000 stu dents leave China each year to come to the Unit ed States to study.” Dr. Liu said. Prior to com ing to the United States, Dr. Liu was employed by his government in the Ministry of Education Of fice. He was the Execu tive Secretary, Guidance Committee for Students Educated Abroad. Needless to say. Dr. Liu is excited about this opportunity to return home. “1 will be teach ing “History of the Far Hast” during the second nine-weeks of the aca demic 68-69 semester; and ‘‘Political History of Contemporary China” during the summer ses sion. I plan to use the trip to gather additional materials for the courses and visit family and friends.” he said. Dr. Liu said that the National Chinese govern ment has scheduled sev eral workshops, briefings and guided tours for par ticipants and he hopes to visit some of the off shore Islands while there. Dr. Liu is a politi cal columnist for the China Dally News and the publisher on learning of Dr. Liu’s invitation wired him and said “Happy to learn of your inclusion of scholars and intellec tuals invited to return home.” Dr. Liu is the author of two books “History of Western Political I'hought” and “Interna tional Relations”. He is a frequent contributor to scholarly publications. Presently, he is work ing on a book concerning United States Policy to ward Mainland China. He holds a graduate degree from the Univer sity of Cincinnati and the doctorate degree in poli tical science from North Texas State University. His affiliations include Phi Delta Kappa, Amer ican Political Science As sociation, Southern Polit ical Science Association, and the Association for Asian Studies. Both Pyra mids and GI’s enjoyed a well-planned evening of stimulating activities and fun. The Trustees of Fay etteville State College revealed March 18, that the resignation of Presi dent Rudolph Jones, sub mitted at a regular meet ing on January 30th, had reluctantly been accept ed. A committee of three has been appointed to seek a successor to Dr. Jones. He is scheduled to leave the FSC post on July 31, 1969. In stepping down from the $22,000 post Dr. Jones said he considered this action appropriate be cause of his ‘health and for other personal rea sons.” Now serving in his 13th year as head of the in stitution, Jones has seen significant Improvements during his tenure of of fice. The curriculum has been expanded. The num ber of students and teach ers has doubled. Faculty salaries have more than doubled. Many new staff members have been add ed. Expansion of the phy sical plant has been ex ceptional Physical facil ities that have been im proved include the con struction of seven new buildings, extensive roadways, walkways, parking areas, and cam pus lighting. They also In clude renovation of three buildings, the construc tion of four tennis courts and a track on the ath letic field. The college has purchased over 60 acres of land across the railroad from the pre sent campus. On this tract ground will soon be brok en for a new administra tion building and a new student center. Under the Jones admin istration the college has succeeded in getting funds from the federal govern ment and from founda tions. With a part of such money seven regular teachers are doing fur ther study at universi ties this year and about twenty are expected to study during the summer of 1969. The quality of the stu dent body has improved as the college no longer has an “open door” pol icy and the standards for admission are being rais ed yearly. A College Foundation has been Initiated and a Development Office has been opened on a part time basis. After July 1,1969 this will become a full time office and the col lege hopes to secure In creasing contributions from business. Industry, foundations, and friends. In submitting his re signation President Jones thanked the Trus tees for their encourage ment and support. He said he had enjoyed the honor and respect accordedhim as a college president.
